Malcolm Middleton was appointed as Queensland’s third Government Architect in July 2011. As Queensland Government Architect, Malcolm provides high level advice to the Queensland Government and other decision making authorities on contemporary design and heritage issues.

His role includes supporting innovative designs for Government buildings and encouraging opportunities for regional architects and the development design solutions that express regional aspirations and challenges.

Malcolm is a qualified architect and urban designer and has been a private practitioner for almost thirty years in Queensland.  He recently served as the Director of the Australian Institute of Architects State Awards program providing him with a comprehensive overview of architectural standards across the State. He is a former member of the Queensland Heritage Council and South Bank Design Advisory Panel and was the architectural team leader for the Roma Street Parkland project.

Brisbane Airport CorporationBrisbane Airport Corporation

Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) is a proud supporter of the 2011 Brisbane Open House and is committed to the preservation of Brisbane’s character and identity, particularly in regards to its contribution to the unique style of ‘subtropical’ architecture. As the ‘gateway’ to Queensland and Australia, BAC regards this as an important responsibility, promoting the region’s subtropical lifestyle and attributes to visitors, business and new residents to Brisbane, ensuring economic growth and prosperity.

Brisbane Airport comprises diverse precincts that contribute to Brisbane’s character including Airport Village and the Domestic and International Terminal precincts. The Brisbane Airport Master Plan, 2009 incorporates these precincts and others, which is continually revised to ensure it remains the premier airport of the region and provides a positive contribution to Queensland.

In 2011, BAC launched its national design competition for the first Property Master Plan undertaken by any airport in Australia. The competition followed the success of BAC’s Airport Atelier, a design charette held to explore a series of urban development ideas for the new plan. The intention is to develop a comprehensive Property Master Plan with competition winner AECOM/Grimshaw/PWC/Tract by December 2011, for BAC’s development area of approximately 1000 hectares.
